Cabezas de San Juan

Our weekend continued with a trip to the natural reserve known as Las Cabezas de San Juan. Located at the most northeastern point of the island is a place where you can observe several life zones in a relatively small space. You can see a dry forest, mangrove forest, sandy and rocky beaches and coral reefs. The place is managed by the Conservation Trust (Fideicomiso de Conservación) a private entity that raises money to acquire and manage areas of important ecological value. Once they own the property, they develop educational and scientific projects and allow the community to benefit from it. Another place they manage is Hacienda Buena Vista in Ponce.

After making reservations a few days in advance we got there at a round 1:30pm, although the weather was not helping the tour started at 2pm. Actually the weather was perfect, being a dry forest usually temperature there soars near the 90’s, but being all cloudy the sun didn’t came out and the temperature was perfect. We boarded the trolleys for a tour that would last two hours. Two hours that we really enjoyed. The guide was really good, having study this ecosystems many times I made sure what he was saying was right (ahem, sorry ‘bout that). We walked over the wooden boardwalk over the bioluminescent lagoon seeing all the fiddler crabs, went to the rocky beach to see the skeletons of different species of corals and finished with a visit to the Fajardo lighthouse the second most old one after El Morro. Inside they had different exhibitions with living organisms that are found in the reserve and of course the beautiful view from the top of the building.

We really enjoyed the trip, the kids and Janice had a great time, we recommend this to anyone interested in the outdoors.

entre las montañas y el mar

Este pasado fin de semana pasamos unos excelentes días con mis padrinos, Huáscar y Joan, y Joanne. Gracias a los “Castillos de San Juan”, tuvimos alojamiento en los apartamentos Playas del Yunque en el municipio de Río Grande. Estuvimos de jueves a sábado y aunque con una agenda un poco cargada tuvimos tiempo para despejarnos del diario vivir. A unos 50 minutos de viaje de San Juan llegamos al complejo, la playa a solo unos pasos hacia la izquierda y la piscina a la derecha, imagínense como estaban Eduardo y Claudia. Aunque teníamos advertencia de onda tropical logramos hacer lo que nos habíamos propuesto.

El jueves por la tarde subimos al El Yunque, el único bosque lluvioso en el sistema de bosques de los EEUU. Con capas y sombrillas caminamos unas dos horas y visitamos la famosa cascada la Mina, impresionante por demás. Entre una verde vegetación uno que otro insecto, Edu y Claudia hicieron toooodo el recorrido sin casi quejarse (Janice y yo ‘tamos tan orgullosos). Luego nos fuimos a disfrutar de la comida típica de PR en los quioscos de Luquillo, famosos por las frituras. Por la noche nos sentamos a disfrutar de la brisa “tormentosa” y a hablar como hacia tiempo no hacíamos.

Al otro día luego de un rico desayuno, salimos hacia Fajardo, donde hace muchos años atrás vivieron mis padrinos. Les dimos un tour por Las Croabas y Seven Seas, luego los llevamos al hotel El Conquistador y la marina Puerto Del Rey a (como dijo Manina) soñar un poco. Ya por la tarde llegamos al apartamento y llevamos a Edu y Claudia a la piscina, bueno que al final acabamos todos dentro del agua. Ya por la noche y luego de la visita inesperada de un enorme juey en la casa aprovechamos para continuar recordando cuentos de mejores tiempos.

Los cinco y los ...

El pasado 18 de julio Eduardo Andrés cumplió cinco años de vida y junto a su mamá, quien cumplió el 16, celebraron juntos en casa de Tío Iván y Titi Alicia. Ese día junto a los abuelos, los de Ponce y los de Cabo Rojo, un intenso calor y amigos pasamos una tarde agradable. Disfrutamos del BBQ de mi hermano y de los chistes de padrino Eric.

Dos dias después, el 18, llevamos a Eduardo a un miniparque de diversiones el cual el venía pidiendo desde hacía muchísimo tiempo. Desde que aprendió a hablar y cuando veía los anuncios en TV pedía que los llevaran a Wonderpark. Aquí Eduardo y Claudia se montaron en su primera montaña rusa. Edu sin ningun miedo (todo lo contrario a mí a esa edad) se montó solito y aunque después de la segunda vuelta pidió que lo bajaran porque sino vomitaba, si la pasó bien. Claudia se montó en un trencito y unas abejitas que daban vuelta. Si quieren ver mas fotos vayan aquí.

Close(er) To The Heart

If you are familiarized with my taste in music you might think I'm going to write about an inspiring song written and performed by a Canadian trio...but no, not this time at least.

Instead, when I say near the heart, I'm talking about the human heart. My brother Iván, who is an electrical engineer, has been working with devices that are implanted in veins and hearts for quite some time. Currently he works at Medtronic, a company that designs and manufactures medical technology. Recently the division he manages celebrated an important milestone; the sale of the one millionth device worldwide called CapSureFix Novus Model 5076 making it the most-prescribed lead in the history of pacing. The small apparatus that is produced here in Puerto Rico consists (explained in very simple terms) of a cable that connect pacemakers with the cardiac tissue inside the heart. Basically a 2mm in diameter cable that surgeons carefully maneuver through the veins of patient and is responsible for making sure that small electrical charges reach hearts that have an unstable rhythm. Prior to this, Iván reached another important accomplishment some years ago when with a colleague they patented a device known as a stent for Abdominal Aortic Aneurysms (AAA). The mechanism helps increase the internal space of arteries and veins that have reduced diameter allowing the blood to flow freely carrying oxygen to all parts of the body. The stent for the AAA prevents the rupture of the abdominal aneurysms.

Last week we spent a few days in the municipality of Guánica, that's on the South coast of the island, like a half an hour drive from Ponce. We stayed in the Copamarina hotel; courtesy of Abuelo and Abu.

The idea was for me and Janice to take a couple of days for ourselves, leaving the kids in Ponce, but once we got there and saw the beach and the pools we couldn't resist and went back to Ponce and picked them up because we knew they would enjoy all those things.

Beside spending countless hours in the pool, the highlight of the trip for the kids (and me!)was going to the dry forest. Guánica's Dry Forest declared a United Nations Biosphere Reserve in 1981 is a very warm ecosystem in which less that 40 inches of rain fall each year. Is an amazing place which is totally the opposite to what we see in El Yunque, which is the most recognized (rain) forest in Puerto Rico.

When we got to the end of Road 333, which borders the forest through the South, we found that the area where you leave the cars was closed. Park rangers limit the access to cars every year because it is the breeding and nesting ground for many species of birds and amphibians. So we left the car on the side of the road. We started walking and immediately Eduardo was ready to jump in the water, but I wanted him to see something before doing that. After a couple of minutes walking we found a small lagoon, more like a big puddle. These are seasonal ponds that form every year and many species use to reproduce and as a source of food. Swimming in it there were thousands of TADPOLES ready to metamorphosize into frogs. I just want to point out that these tadpoles aren't from the endangered Sapo Concho which is a protected species, making playing with these creatures illegal.

Claudia and Edu were so excited when they saw the animals they didn't know what to do. Immediately I captured a couple of tadpoles for them and they were static, observing them and feeling them...I knew they would react like that. You see, those two are like me. When I go to the beach or a forest or the backyard for that matter, they don't simply relax and enjoy the sun. They start looking for things and investigating what's moving over there or flying above you. Since Eduardo saw the beach in Guánica, he started asking - "cuando vamos a la playa a buscar cobitos"- those are hermit crabs. Although he likes the water and sandy beaches, he really enjoys going to places where there are rock and things he can lift to see what's hiding underneath. So after playing for a while with the tadpoles we went to the beach nearby that is full of rocks and dead corals and all sort of small, living wildlife...Edu's paradise. And Claudia no se queda atrás, they both grabbed a plastic cup and started collecting all sort of organisms, tiny crabs, sea urchins, hermit crabs, and even a brittle starfish. They had a lot of fun. They nice thing is that they are used to release the animals without any complaints after observing and "playing" with them.

I know what you are going to say...oh here comes Gian with his obsession, manatees...well I am not obsessed, I simply pay more attention to them than you do.


The oldest manatee kept in captivity turns 58 this month. This is an animal that every time he celebrates his b-day he breaks a record. The animal was born in captivity and after his mother died, he was hand raised and never released fearing he didn't have the necessary skills to survive (back then they didn't know all that we know today, on very rare occasions manatees are kept in captivity these days).

At the South Florida Museum's website they even have a Snooty cam where you can watch Snooty in his pool...in real life they are very boring animals, imagine through a web cam!!!

Muchas veces pensé en esto cuando veía los noticieros locales, pero pensé que era yo el único en pensar así. Pero al parecer no, ayer en el periódico El Nuevo Día la escritora Mayra Montero en su acostumbrada columna establece el punto de una manera que solo ella puede. La Sra. Montero lleva mucho tiempo escribiendo para el periódico y tiene un estilo muy particular, de hecho es de las pocas personas que veo que utiliza malas palabras en sus ensayos y en ningún momento resultan de mal gusto.

Su artículo, el cual pueden ver aqui, habla de la actual crisis por la que atraviesa nuestro país.

...mi espacio, tu espacio

En mi familia, si otra vez del lado de mi tia Marcia y mi primo Ricardo, hay un dicho que dice - el que pestapierde ñea - léanlo varias veces y verán de donde sale. En fin lo que quiere decir es que si te descuidas con algo vas a pagar las consecuencias. ¡Y cuan cierto es eso en esta vida!

Es por eso que hay que estar con un pie 'alante para no pagar las consecuencias. Yo trabajo como maestro en una escuela, específicamente con los mas grandes en escuela superior. Es una escuela donde el idioma principal es el inglés y el nivel socioeconómico es alto, bien alto. Aunque eso es irrelevante para el punto que quiero establecer, si me ha ayudado a llegar a la conclusión que traigo con el dicho de mi familia.

En la escuela tenemos muchos recursos; entre algunos están las computadoras, cada estudiante tiene su propia "laptop" y hay internet inalámbrico por todo el campus, o sea que podemos estar conectados en cualquier lugar y a cualquier momento al internet. Entre los "sites" mas populares y que he conocido a través de los estudiantes es el famoso myspace.com . Para el que nunca haya oido hablar de esto el propósito principal es hacer amigos, entre otras cosas. El problema es esas otras cosas...

En el site puedes poner información que tu quieras que los demás sepan de ti, incluyendo tu edad, gustos personales, fotos etc. A la misma vez tienes lo que se conoce como "tus amigos". Estas son las personas que tu quieres tener como invitados a tu "site" para mantenerte en comunicación con ellos. Aunque tu información es pública en todo el internet, algo así como este blog.

Bueno ¿que tiene que ver todo esto con estar "mosca" como dicen los venezolanos? Resulta que el pasado mes de abril unos jóvenes en Kansas estaban planificando un ataque con armas contra su escuela y si no hubiera sido por que unos de los lugares que utilizaron para planear y de cierta manera advertir del evento fue myspace.com las autoridades jamás se hubieran enterado y no hubieran podido detener la tragedia. El site puede ser muy útil para mantenerte en contacto con personas que tal vez no veas a menudo o tal vez conocer gente con tus mismos intereses y gustos (a quién le guste hacer esto). El problemas es a quién estás conociendo y si en realidad la persona es quien dice que es.

Eduardo (mi hijo) ya se está interesando en usar la computadora y es cuestión de tiempo para que esté navegando el espacio cibernético. Es por eso que no quiero "pestaperder" y me he dado a la tarea de mantenerme al dia en cuanto a que pueden accesar los jóvenes por internet. Hace poco abrí una cuenta en myspace.com con la excusa de manterme en comunicación con algunos de mis primos. La misma es http://www.myspace.com/gianatee para el quiera visitarla. Pero en realidad la abrí para conocer que era eso, que se puede y no se puede hacer ahí, etc. Hay personas de todas las edades inscritas y de todas partes del mundo. Y es increíble darte cuenta como tu puedes mas o menos descifrar como es una persona con solo algunos datos simples. Y es a esto que hay que velar. Ya que hay mucha gente buscando posible información sensitiva que pueden utilizar para cometer algún crimen. Estos jóvenes no tienen ningún tipo de supervisión aquí. Yo no pretendo controlar que van o no a ver mis hijos cuando sen grandes pero si puedo estar al tanto de lo que pueden hacer y educarlos y advertirles de los riesgos. Navegando por el site he encontrado las páginas de algunos de mis estudiantes y es interesante ver como se describen algunos de ellos y compararlos con lo que son en la realidad. Lo curioso es que algunos de ellos me han encontrado a mi y me han hecho parte de "sus amigos"... imagínense tener a un maestro ahí, estoy seguro que hay otros que no se le ocurriría esa locura. Por cierto sepan que ese "site" fue bloqueado en la escuela ya que no promueve nada educativo, los muchachos lo accesan desde su casa.

Me he dado cuenta que el internet puede ser unos de los lugares mas peligrosos para niños y jóvenes sin supervisión, pero a la misma vez es un recurso sin el cual yo no podria vivir ahora mismo. Es la herramienta mas útil que tengo en mi trabajo y aislar a alguien de ese mundo sería un error. Pero lamentablemente la sociedad actual (en este caso el internet) promueve unas tendencias que para nada son saludables para el desarrollo de una persona y pienso tener un pie 'alante pa'que ni Eduardo ni Claudia se me descarrilen...crucen los dedos conmigo.

Derrota carioca

Bueno las esperanzas que me quedaban de que la Copa del Mundo se quedara en América se han esfumado con la derrota de Brazil ante Francia (0-1). No cabe duda que Francia se merecía la victoria ya que desde el primer minuto hasta el noventa mostró un mejor juego. La defensa destruyó a Brazil. Ronaldo y Ronaldinho no se vieron jugar, cada vez que recibían el balón dos (o mas) defensores venían y hacían su trabajo. Tanto atacó Francia la portería brasileña que era cuestión de tiempo para que anotaran.

Brazil no jugó bien en este mundial, su defensa del campeonato no fue con mucho empeño. Me hubiera gustado que Ecuador diera la sorpresa y llegara mas lejos derrotanto a Inglaterra, algo que hizo Portugal hoy. Portugal ha jugado bastante bien y se merece estar ahí, aunque sus jugadores abusan del "teatro" que es típico de este deporte.

Yo no hago pronósticos y mucho menos en este deporte el cual sigo muy poco, pero me gustaría ver un duelo de invictos en la final. Entiendo que Alemania debe liquidar a Italia el martes y ruego que Portugal saque del camino a Francia y veo a Alemania llevándose la copa...fue eso un pronóstico?
